DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Aeon Towers, dubbed as “the most iconic building project in Davao city” to date, broke ground on 30th of May, 2013, marking the start of full-swing construction of this 3.1 billion-worth mixed-use facility — a 33-storey structure that will soon tower the city’s skyline, along J.P. Laurel Avenue, near the Ayala Complex.

The ground breaking ceremony was led by FTC Group of Companies President Ian Y. Cruz, who delivered a warm and optimistic message before the  guests. In his speech, he thanked his family and the rest of the company’s backbone, as well as the project partners from different institutions, for the ‘realization’ of this business endeavor.

Experience Asia in Davao at Banana Leaf Restaurant, SM Lanang Premier

| Davao Reviews | May 28, 2013

It was our second time dining in this restaurant but, just like the first, still we were captivated!  Here’s why: the place really offers a unique dining experience that keeps us coming back. And so, with the aim of sharing that ‘experience’ to Davao Portal loyal followers – and the rest of the readers – I have written this post.

Here’s our dining experience (the second time around).

A Malaysian-dressed female staff welcomed us with a warm smile, and a male waiter led us to our table with real banana leaves placed on it to be used as alternative to plates. The place had a comfortable and cozy ambience, which made me feel at home.

Mindanao Toy Convention in Davao City

| Davao Expo / Exhibits | May 16, 2013

toy convention 2013 at Gmall in davao city

Who says anime is only for kids? Well, not really! It is for adult as well and the number of people who flocked during the Mindanao Toy Convention is a clear proof to that. Like me, I’m already 26 but I am still a big fan of anime. I remember when I was a kid, I would cry if I could not watch Ghost FighterFushigi Yugi and other amime series on GMA. Those programs were on same schedules / time slots with local news on its rival network and my Dad always wanted to watch the latter. In other words, I only had a chance to watch when my father is not around.

Wall Climbing At Edge – The Outdoor Specialist: Why Wall Climbing Can Be Like Solving Math

| Davao Attractions | May 9, 2013

For the love of doing something new, my office mates and I tried wall climbing at Edge –  the Outdoor Specialist. It’s located along J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City, in front of Seda Abreeza Hotel, so it’s easy to find. The place looks underrated at first glimpse because it has a pretty smaller space compared to other wall climbing facilities in town – and you see the wall you are about to climb immediately even from the outside. But my initial impression on the place convinced me yet again to never judge a book by its cover.

Edge Outdoor is open from Mondays to Sundays, 5-9pm, so that means wall climbing in nighttime – with the stars above you and the honking cars in the street. But all of these are sent to oblivion once you get your hands on those rocks! *insert rock music*

A Taste of Korea in Davao: Manna Korean Restaurant at SM Lanang Premier

| Davao Reviews | May 7, 2013

I’m a bit of a fan with anything “Korean”: music, fashion, celebrities and food!

Speaking of food, for the first time ever, my friend and I decided to dine in a Korean Restaurant at SM Lanang’s Sky Garden – Manna Korean Restaurant “The Food from Heaven”. And the experience proved good for me.

Manna Korean Restaurant has other branch located at C5 Dormitel, Roxas Avenue, Davao City. However, we tried the one at SM Lanang’s Sky Garden. We were welcomed with a friendly receptionist in complete hanbok attire, and were served by attentive waiters.

The Thrill and Excitement at Havoc Fun Run

| Davao Events | April 18, 2013

I dare to live life to the fullest so, aside from travel, I included fun run on my bucket list this year 😀 . And while there’s still a lot other things on my list , it is so fulfilling to realize that I was able to accomplish this item as early as this month – Davao City’s Havoc Regeneration Fun Run made it happen…and exceeded my expectation on how ‘fun’ could fun run be, in fact.

With thrill and excitement, my colleagues and I decided to join in this event that was set on April 7.  It had a registration fee worth 350.00 – to cover the singlet, race bib and free snacks.  The proceeds was intended for the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines – another good reason why we were encouraged to join.

The First-Ever ‘Sinugba’ Festival in Davao City

| Davao Events | March 30, 2013

Davao City celebrated its 76th founding anniversary just this March with lots of fun, enjoyable activities – some were organized by the local government and some initiated by the private sectors.

Among the much-awaited events was the Sinugba Festival – perhaps greatly because it was the city’s first time to have such event (at least as big as this).

Sinugba is a local dialect that means grilled in English. So, Sinugba Festival can be roughly translated to Grilled Foods Festival” – an exciting occasion where local restaurants, food chains, grill houses come together in one place to showcase various foods to the public, and usually is staged in a huge open area.

So, because I had no experience going to such an event in the past, I thought it was a good idea not to miss it – and I did (yehey!) With friends and colleagues, we went there in the area – it was located within Juna Subdivision, near the Ateneo de Davao, Matina Campus and just around 500 meters away from the Matina Highway (sorry, I forgot the exact address).

When we got to the area, we were welcomed by a very festive atmosphere – foods, music, and people were in harmony! It seemed everybody was having a good time. And while we expected just grilled foods, we were surprised that the place offered more than that – from delicious foods (not just grilled) to memorabilia to clothing lines…and more collectible items – plus live bands! It was really a lot of fun – eating dinner with friends, zipping my now favorite buko shake, listening to live performances from local bands, roaming around to check what else was there – aah! What more can I say?

So, below are some frozen moments that I’d like to share, taken from that event (photo credit: Christine Carreon)

That’s all for now folks! Be back again in another blog post – soon…
