Lots of activities were prepared in line with the 76th Araw ng Dabaw celebration and among these was the “4th National Davao Dog Summit”. Hundreds of participants graced the event – and yes, we spotted some local celebrities in this year’s edition as well!
This particular event is done annually wherein dog lovers from within and outside the city gather together to promote common cause – awareness on animal welfare, passion for dog/pet raising. It is usually started by a few kilometers walk-run of the participants (with their dogs) to the venue (this year was at People’s Park) and then followed by a short program, which includes dog exhibitions and then finally the awarding ceremony.
The recent dog summit followed the usual program flow (same as before) and it ended a great success.
So, we are excited to share with you here some of the delightful moments we have captured during the event.

The Davao Portal team was one of the invited guests during the brand launching of Godiva Skin Care products held at SM City Davao (Annex) on February 2, 2013. It was really an exciting event for us (we could not afford to miss it) for two main reasons: (1) it was our first business engagement since this website was launched in July 2012, so we thought it’s really a privilege to be part of the said event; and (2) because it was Godiva’s first of its series of product introductions to Filipino consumers ; it’s an honor for us Davaoeños to experience it first – yes, they have chosen Davao for its initial market distribution (the new Godiva skin care product is not yet available in other regions – not even in Metro Manila).
The Davao Portal team with Ms. Ella Bugayong-Pabellano, the Marketing Services Manager, Godiva Inc., at the registration booth. (Ms. Ella was really accommodating)
We got a chance to roam around even before the program started and the above photos show the team taking some shots (with images of those who underwent FREE skin care treatment at the background).
Ms. Claudette Centeno from ABS-CBN, the host of the event, started the program with some exciting announcements – including our chances to win a lenovo phone.
The Godiva Inc. manager welcomes the audience in her opening speech, with informative discussion regarding the product and what sets it apart from other skin care brands in the market today.
Ms. Claudette introduces Allan Alforque, one of Davao’s prominent hair and make-up artists.
Allan Alforque – doing what he is known best – demonstrates about how to apply an appropriate make-up for a particular occasion.
Claudette Centeno asking an audience about her beauty journey with Godiva (free skin care treatments were done during the launching – Feb 1-3, 2013)
The above photos show mallgoers undergoing FREE skin care treatments; sample Godiva products were also given to all the guests who participated in the event.
Claudette introduces the new face of Godiva, Ms. Jessica Kienle (more about this gorgeous lady can be found here)
Product endorser / image model Jessica Kienle talks about her beauty regimen and shares some useful skin care tips to the audience.
Jessica Kienle draws a name for Lenovo phone winner.
The lucky audience raffle draw winner, Quimz Renegado, gives thanks for the phone she won; she’s a local blogger – her blog’s here.
Claudette Centeno interviews Y-FI (Young Filipinos) boyband members, who also graced the event with their soulful song renditions.
Delicious food treats were shared to all the guests / participants of the event (and yes, we did not miss it!)

2012 was quite a booming year for Davao city in terms of building constructions – both for commercial and residential projects – and this trend is expected to continue in 2013 – and in the coming years – with a number of companies expressing their interests for Davao investments. So, don’t be surprised (at least not that much) if you see T-cranes sprouting here and there – you might see one even in your neighborhood. 🙂
This year, we can expect lots of construction activities in the city and here are some interesting projects in the pipeline (ongoing and upcoming):
A 26-storey residential tower that is being built inside the Abreeza complex (Ayala Company). The construction started in 2012 and if you check it out today, you can notice that the building is slowly shaping up (they are currently working for its 10th floor). This project is expected to top off in 2014 and the turnover will be in 2015.
For more detail about this project, visit Abreeza Residences Official Page.
This is a 33-story mixed-use commercial building project by FTC Group of Companies that will rise along J.P. Laurel Avenue (in front of Redemptorist Church and near the Abreeza Complex). The building will consist commercial areas, hotel, and residential condominium units.
As of this posting, they are on its clearing operation (old building is being demolished) to give way for the construction that is expected to commence first quarter this year.
For more details, visit Aeon Tower Official Website.
Another building construction that is currently in the works is AdDU’s 12-story community building, the school is allocating Php 865 million for the entire project, which includes a a separate 4-story building intended for sports and recreations. If you pass by the area today, you will notice that T-cranes are already put in place and people working in the area are already visible.
More about this project can be found here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1530086
Rising along C.M. Recto Avenue (Claveria) is another Ayala project that will consist of 2 residential towers (24 and 29-storey buildings) that will house 431 units, including special two-bedroom units from the 19th to the 23rd floor; parking units available from the ground to the 4th floor.
There is no announcement yet as to when the construction will commence – as of this posting.
For more details, visit Avida Towers Davao Offcial Page.
Initially intended for business process outsourcing companies, the project is now planned to house other type of businesses as well and thus they changed its name to “Abreeza Corporate Center”.
As of this posting, we can see that the project is more or less 70 percent complete so we can expect that it will be fully operational last quarter this year.
The 1st and second floor is said to be an extension of the Abreeza Mall and will house more tenants and popular brands. The rest of the building will be occupied by BPO companies and other conventional office-based businesses.
Another major project in Davao City that has just started (last quarter of 2012) is the Felcris Centrale by Felcris Hotels and Resorts Corporation. This business community complex will consist of a mall, a 12-storey office tower, residential towers, hotels, and other recreational facility. For the mall and BPO building alone, the company has allocated at least PHP 1 Billion.
The project will rise along Quimpo Boulevard, Barangay Bucana (right in front of the Land Transportation Office).
JTC is a 12-storey hotel that is being built along J.P Laurel Avenue, near the SM Lanang Complex. The project is about 60% complete. However, there are some speculations that the company behind this project is temporarily stopping the construction for some reasons – but this is not confirmed. Should the construction continue this year, the hotel is expected to be fully operational next year.
King Dome is a 50,000-seater “indoor cathedral” that will rise inside the Kingdom of Jesus Christ 23-hectare Compound located along Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway (near Davao International Airport). The project has broken ground 3rd quarter of 2012 and is expected to be completed by 2015.
The facility is intended for religious gathering; it is going to be the “epicentre of the greatest spiritual earthquake that will shake the whole world,” Pastor Quiboloy said.
This is a 200-room hotel that is being developed within the SM Lanang Complex (the hotel is attached to the mall through a bridge) and now is almost 100% complete. It is expected to be operational in February this year.

If it is your first time vacationing in Davao City (or if you are a balikbayan that has been away for so long) you surely wonder about the things you can do in the city today – where should you go to make your stay a one- of-kind vacation experience? Well, as you might already know, Davao is the largest city in in the Philippines in terms of land area and that means there are lots of things you can do to make your visit a lot of fun – a perfect getaway!
Here are some of the things that you should not miss doing!
Celebrating Davao Festivals
There are three major festivals you can experience in Davao City in a year. If you are visiting in the month of March, it’s the perfect time to join with Davaoenos in celebrating “Araw ng Dabaw,” which showcases lots of fun activities including street dancing and floral parade competition; agricultural trade; and Mutya ng Davao Pageant, etc.
If you plan to visit in August, you should not miss the Kadayawan Festival, which is considered the festival of festivals in Mindanao, a thanksgiving celebration for the bountiful harvests and a presentation of rich local culture.
During Christmas season, the city celebrates “Pasko Fiesta,” a kind of festival aimed to showcase local talents and creativity through Christmas lightings and decoration competitions, which are highlighted in a Christmas parade.
Visiting Davao Landmarks
There are lots of important landmarks in Davao City that reflects its cultural, historical, and political values. You should not miss visiting the local executive building, the City Hall of Davao located along San Pedro Street (20 to 30-minute ride from the airport); and, just beside it, the Sangguniang Panglungsod, where you can witness legislative sessions (things you should not miss if you are politically-inclined person). And, right across the SP building is the famous San Pedro Cathedral – one of the oldest churches in the city. Also, a few distance from the SP, at the back, is the Museo Davaoeno (Davao Museum) – another place that reflects the life and lifestyle of Davaoenos in an array of colors – where you can see artifacts, art exhibits from Davao-based artists, historical and indigenous people’s photos, etc.
FYI: You can visit the city hall, SP legislative building, San Pedro Cathedral, Davao Museum, and Quezon Park in one hour since they are all in the same area.
Have fun at Davao Crocodile Park
If you are an animal lover, you must be excited visiting this spot. Have you heard about “Pangil”? Well, it lives there – the biggest croc in town. But there is more than seeing crocodiles’ fangs; the place is not only a home of cultured crocs but a haven for a variety of other animals as well – you can see snakes (big pythons are there!), birds, monkeys , deers, wild boars, tigers, etc. The park also has a butterfly garden.
FYI: Davao Crocodile Park is located in Ma-a, Davao City – 20-30 mins from Davao International Airport.
Davao also has a lot to offer when it comes to nature trips – from island to highland, as they say it. If you love beach outing, you can have it anytime you want as the city has lots of beach resorts to offer, including the world-class Pearl Farm Beach Resort and the Paradise Island Resort – both are located in Samal Island, about 30 to 60-minute (at most 2 hours) ferry ride from Davao City proper.
Aside from beaches, you can also visit some of the city’s famous mountain resorts such as the Eden Nature Park and Loleng’s Mountain Resort – both offer a perfect nature-inspired place for event gatherings, whether for business or leisure. These resorts accept walk-in visitors, aside from the conventional bookings; they are about 20 and 25 kilometers away respectively from downtown Davao.
Another recommended place to visit for those who love nature is the Malagos Garden Resort, about one-hour taxi ride from the city proper. This place is the home of the King of Birds – The Philippine Eagle – and other animals and diverse tropical plants. There is nothing to worry about accommodations – it has hotel facilities in a nature environment.
If you are into sports or extreme adventures, you have lots of choices to try as well. You might want to try Davao river-rafting and experience the excitement of wildwaters. You can also try to visit Davao Outland Aventure, another extreme adventure facility in the city that offers rope and obstacle courses as well as cable and ziplines. The site is located in Ma-a, just 10-15 minutes away from downtown in a taxi ride.
Wakeboarding is also another exciting activity you can try in the city and you can have it at Deca Wakeboard Park.
And, if you want to experience the ultimate, you might be interested climbing the highest peak in the Philippines , Mt. Apo – the ultimate destination of mountain climbers especially during lenten season.
Back into the war era – visit the Japanese Tunnel
Located along the Diversion Road in Davao City, the Japanese Tunnel Resort has been attracting both local and foreign tourists since the first time it was made open to public. This tunnel was made during World War II – at the time of Japanese occupation in the city. Stretching about 300 meters deep. The tunnel is said to be carved by the Davao Prisoners of War in 1942. Aside from this main attraction, the resort also offers other facilities including swimming pool and restaurant.
Spend your leisure time at People’s Park
Located in the heart of Downtown Davao, this 4-hectare park offers a place to relax and a venue for fun activities in the middle of this bustling metropolis. This park was inaugurated and was made open to public way back in 2007, showcasing diversified tropical plants, fountains, man-made waferfalls, playground for children, and a whole lot more. Aside from visitors who want to relax during their idle time (you can see most of them sitting on long benches under big tropical trees) it is also the favorite spot for those who exercise daily. The best times to go in the area is early in the morning, around 5 to 8 AM as it is open for people who go there for fitness purposes (Jogging, weights, etc.) and in late afternoon at around 4 PM onward. The park closes at around 9 to 10 PM.
FYI: The park is surrounded by restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, and other leisure places. It is a walking distance from the famous Apo View Hotel, Marco Polo Hotel, and the Royal Mandaya Hotel, and some of the best budget hotels in the city. Walking distance restaurants are Primos, Toryano’s, Pards, Tsuru (Japanese restaurant), and Hanoi (Vietnamese restaurant).
Davao city is home to about 1.5 million people so there’s no wonder why shopping malls are sprouting everywhere. Wherever you are in the city, you can surely find malls near you. Along J.P Laurel Avenue nestled the biggest shopping malls in the city, including Gaisano Mall of Davao, Victoria Plaza Mall, Abreeza (Ayala Mall), and the newly-opened and the biggest of them all, the SM Lanang Premier. Along McArthur Highway (Ma-a intersection), there you can find NCCC Mall; SM City Davao is located along Quimpo Boulevard (south of Davao); Gaisano Grand Citymall is along Ilustre Street – a few meters away from Davao Doctors Hospital.
Satisfy your stomach – food trip in davao
As I have mentioned, there is nothing to worry about places to eat as you can find them anywhere in the city – plated, buffet, fine dining, etc. But of course, you should try some of of the famous home-grown restaurants. You might want to try dining at Penong’s (barbecue and seafoods), Harana (don’t you enjoy being serenaded while eating?). You might also want dining while seeing the lovely panoramic view of the city – try Jack’s Ridge in Shrine Hills and Hilltop along Diversion road.
So, those are the things you can do in Davao City – but they are just a ‘tip of an iceberg’ as there are so much more you can do to make your Davao vacation a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Have a great vacation!
