Davao Events, Press Release, Seminar & Workshop April 20, 2018

Power of pen - Food writing seminar and workshop in Davao City

Food has gone beyond the limitations of our palate and plates. More than a physiological need, it has become a destination for many, a propelling factor for tourism, and a representation of our culture and history.

How do we communicate our culinary experience in a literary sense? What are the different ways to write a credible critique on food? As practitioners and professionals in the hospitality businesses, what are the various styles of writing which we can use in our respective fields? These are among the questions we aim to answer in Power of Pen 8: Mindanao Culinary Culture-Research and Writing Basics.

This May 19, 2018, five prominent food writers, researchers, and culinary experts will set foot on Ateneo De Davao University in Mindanao to share their journeys, insights, and lessons on Food Writing and Research.

In this seminar and workshop, aspiring food writers, marketing professionals, and social media influencers will be informed and equipped with the essential key points and instructions on crafting food reviews with informative, entertaining, and flavorful content with the guidance of Ms. Michaela Fenix, an editor and writer for Philippine Daily Inquirer and Ms. Margaux Salcedo, a columnist from the same national newspaper. As they will speak about Food Knowledge & The Importance of Research for Food Stories and Ideas, Feature Writing, and writing Restaurant Reviews. Furthermore, they will also be discussing how to produce a readable and evocative work in order to successfully market it to its target readers.

Our resource speakers Chef Datu Shariff Pendatun III, Dr. Macario Tiu, and Ms. Lolita Lacuesta, will take on an encompassing discussion on Mindanaoan cuisine, its history and socio-cultural narratives and how we can utilize its richness strengths to encourage research, promotion, and preservation of our culture through writing. Topics for this segment are as follows: A Study on the Cuisine of Muslim Mindanao (Chef Datu Shariff Pendatun III), Documenting The Recipes of The Ten Tribes of Davao (Dr. Macario Tiu), and The Davao We Know: Writing to Record Socio-Cultural History (Ms. Lolita Lacuesta).

Furthermore to these scholarly inquiries on culture and research, the Power of Pen will also address practical techniques to apply food writing specifically to effectively market restaurant offerings, hotel promotions, and travel pitches to both local and foreign spectators. To add excitement and fun, everyone will also be given a chance to write their personal experiences adapting to various scenarios through a writing workshop before the end of the program.

Join the Power of Pen this May 19, 2018 at the Training Room, 8F, Community Center of the First Companion, Ateneo De Davao University, E Jacinto St., Davao City from 9AM to 5PM and take delight in its relishing ideas and discussions on both literary gastronomic explorations.

Superhero Sculpture Exhibit by Harold Soriaga at Abreeza Mall (A Father’s Day Event)

Davao Events, Davao Expo / Exhibits June 15, 2013

Yesterday, the Davao Portal Team had the opportunity to be with people who are passionate in sculptures — in the event dubbed “Superhero Sculptures by Daddy Harold Soriaga: A Father’s Day Art Exhibit,” held at Abreeza Mall, Davao City. We thought it was timely as this month, we are honoring our fathers — our all-time favorite superheroes — in various ways. Thus, the said event is worth-featuring and deserves a place here on our blog.

During the event, we got the chance to meet the man behind the masterpiece, Mr. Harold Soriaga, the artist himself. In his speech, he said that he really took  time working, preparing for this event (his first exhibit) that he jokingly said he even had no time giving a massage for his wife during the course of the preparation. He also thanked everybody who came, as well as those people who helped him, with special acknowledgement to his sister, Hazel, who also took a big part for the realization of the event. And, in his welcoming gesture, he invited all of the visitors to see his creations (there were 26 items displayed) that he started creating in 2006. When asked how long does it take to finish a single sculpture, “usually, it takes 3 months for me to finish one,” he said.

The Thrill and Excitement at Havoc Fun Run

Davao Events April 18, 2013

I dare to live life to the fullest so, aside from travel, I included fun run on my bucket list this year 😀 . And while there’s still a lot other things on my list , it is so fulfilling to realize that I was able to accomplish this item as early as this month – Davao City’s Havoc Regeneration Fun Run made it happen…and exceeded my expectation on how ‘fun’ could fun run be, in fact.

With thrill and excitement, my colleagues and I decided to join in this event that was set on April 7.  It had a registration fee worth 350.00 – to cover the singlet, race bib and free snacks.  The proceeds was intended for the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines – another good reason why we were encouraged to join.

Godiva Natural Skin Care Product Launching in Davao

Business Engagement, Davao Events February 4, 2013

(Yes, Davao Portal Team was there!)

The Davao Portal team was one of the invited guests during the brand launching of Godiva Skin Care products held at SM City Davao (Annex) on February 2, 2013. It was really an exciting event for us (we could not afford to miss it) for two main reasons: (1) it was our first business engagement since this website was launched in July 2012, so we thought it’s really a privilege to be part of the said event; and (2) because it was Godiva’s first of its series of product introductions to Filipino consumers ; it’s an honor for us Davaoeños to experience it first – yes, they have chosen Davao for its initial market distribution (the new Godiva skin care product is not yet available in other regions – not even in Metro Manila).

So, how’s our Godiva experience? We have captured some photos below to tell it all!

2nd Graphic Design Conference – Graphicon Davao 2012

Davao Events December 7, 2012

A special gathering of animators and graphic designers dubbed as “Graphicon Davao: Graphic Design Conference 2012” was held on December 1, 2012 (Saturday) at the CAP Auditorium in Davao City. The said event was organized by DUAAD (Davao United Association of Animators and Designers, Inc.) and participated by various sectors, including delegates from business as well as from the academe. I was able to experience the said convention myself (I was one of the participants) and I could say that it was indeed an exciting and fruitful gathering – no wonder why the event drew thousands of participants.

graphicon 2012

This convention is one of the most awaited events every year especially to those who are interested in web arts; for students and even professionals who want to learn about multimedia and graphic design, branding, visual effects and web technology.

Part of the convention that I liked most was hearing inspiring stories and ideas from the best artists all over the country and I can say they really are the best in their fields.

I was amazed by Chad Manzano’s  talk where he shared about his works, which  is, in general, about illustrations for t-shirts and clothing lines. Some of his works are in collaboration with Urbandub, a well-known rock band here in the country. Although he was a little bit weird with his sun glasses on all the time in a dark auditorium, he did not fail the kids with his enthusiasm – both in his work and passion in vector art.

[nggallery id=5]

The second speaker was Ritchie Baquirin, a director of PGDA or Philippine Graphic Design Awards.  His talk was about Windows 8.

After the break the convention heats up with a short game “are you smarter  than a 5th grader Philippine edition”.  That was fun!

The 3rd speaker was Val Nizam Villar. He talked about HTML 5, CSS 3, User Interface, typography, Semantics, and Web standards, which were nice inputs especially for me as I deal a lot of  Wordpress tasks.

[nggallery id=6]

The 4th speaker was even more interesting, the crowd was thrilled when this one-time amateur boxing champion Isabela Gatuslao, a branding specialist, was introduced. She shared her experiences about her works in prestigious brands including National bookstore, Daphne Osena Paez, and Lucy Torres.

[nggallery id=7]

Aseo or Vincent Rhafael Aseo, a graduate of AB in Multimedia Arts in Asia Pacific College, was the 5th speaker. He shared his funny experiences before reaching the top in his career. He said that “chicks dig vector” that’s why he is doing it.  This passion has led him to Germany and helped him to work at Oracoms, the Book of Creations in France and The Imperial college of London Magazine.

The last but not the least speaker was Nico Puertollano,  a coño guy from LA with ‘astig’ performance and presentation of motion design.  The Executive Creative Director of Flux Design Labs gave the participants bird’s eye view on motion design.

The event indeed a big success – and I am looking forward for the next edition of this event next year.
